About the Artist
Joan Lawson expresses her love of nature in her paintings. She finds inspiration in the natural beauty and light of the Texas Hill Country, as well as her travels in the United States and abroad. Her style ranges from realism to nonrepresentational, depending on how the subject renders itself at the time.
She enjoys painting her beautiful surroundings but also likes to express in abstract and figurative form her interpretation of dreams and visions. "I express my relationship to the Universe through my art."
Having painted for years in oils and watercolors, Joan now enjoys the flexibility of acrylics to achieve texture and depth in her work. She paints either on canvas or paper, using sponges to apply washes and textured layers. Additional texture is added by using a palette knife to build up the paint or by collaging with papers, fibers, sand, or "found objects." Her use of bold colors and intense contrasts of light and dark produces works that are uniquely dramatic and emotional.
Joan paints and gives lessons in her Dream Catcher Art Studio located in the Texas Hill Country southwest of Austin. She has a BA in studio art from Oklahoma City University and has studied painting with well-known artists in the U. S. And France. She is a member of The First Frontier Collage Society, Waterloo Watercolor Group, and Austin Visual Arts Association. She is a founding member and officer of the Creative Arts Society in Austin.
Her paintings are in private and corporate collections in the U. S. and abroad. Her work can be seen at her Dream Catcher Art Studio and in Wimberly at Gallery on the Square.
